Suzy Stride visits Harlow YCT as part of Children’s Mental Health week

Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Harlow; Suzy Stride has  praised the ‘invaluable’ work of Harlow’s Youth Concern Trust as she met  with local students to discuss the importance of Children’s’ Mental Health Week, which took place between 16th– 22nd Feb.

The charity hopes to raise awareness of mental health amongst young people and to encourage children and parents to get the earliest possible support.

YCT provides confidential one-to-one counselling and other emotional support to young people in schools and communities. Although established and based in Harlow, YCT has gradually expanded its work to include other areas.

There have been huge cuts to children’s mental health services since the Tory/ Lib Dem government came to power in 2010.

Suzy Stride said:

‘Raising awareness and breaking the stigma around mental health is crucial and meeting with local students is a great way to get the conversation started. Harlow’s Youth Concern Trust has led the way in our community by offering emotional support to young people’.

‘Early intervention is absolutely essential and YCT should be applauded for their invaluable work. They are testimony to the compassion and care in our community, providing much needed support to young people going through difficult times in their lives.

The next Labour government will end the starving of funds from young people’s mental health and place more emphasis on prevention. This is not just the right thing for young people but it will relieve pressure on the NHS in the long term’
