Tom Newens

Having lived in Old Harlow for twenty-three out of twenty-four years, I feel I know the area and its issues well.  I am also active in a wide range of voluntary community activities – including the arts, history, and events and initiatives to bring the community together to support one another.

I have supported the campaign to oppose the Gilden Way Development, as I believe that it is:

  • the wrong location
  • lacks the necessary infrastructure support
  • presents flooding risks
  • will not contribute adequate social housing to significantly reduce the numbers on the Council’s lengthy waiting list

I share many residents’ concerns about the Conservatives’ plans to give away Harlow’s discretionary services – like the Museum of Harlow, paddling pools, Parndon Wood Nature Reserve, Pets’ Corner, the Gibberd Gallery, and Harlow Playhouse – to independent bodies, especially as there seems little guarantee of a secure future once the ‘Big Society’ money has run out.

I enjoyed meeting many residents as Labour & Co-operative Party candidate in Old Harlow in the 2011 local elections, and was delighted to be entrusted with 40% of the vote on Polling Day.  I look forward, once again, to meeting, genuinely listening, and discussing issues with residents in person, but, in the mean time, please feel free to get in touch by e-mail.
